    WAS BUILT BY THE CITIZENS OF BENTON COUNTY ARKANSAS FOR CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS WHO DIED AT THE BATTLE, IN PARTICULAR IT MEMORIALIZES: GENERAL BEN MCCULLOCH of TEXAS, GENERAL JAMES McINTOSH of ARKANSAS , GENERAL WILLIAM SLACK of MISSOURI.
    * The Battle of Pea Ridge (Mar 7,1862-Mar 8,1862) also known as the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern, took place in the American Civil War near Leetown, northeast of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Federal forces, led by Brig. Gen. Samuel R. Curtis, who moved south from central Missouri, spearheading Confederate forces into northwestern Arkansas. 23,000 soldiers fought at Pea Ridge to decide the fate of Missouri and was a turning point of the war in the West. The 4,300 acre battlefield honors those who fought and died on these grounds. Pea Ridge was the most pivotal Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River and is one of the most intact Civil War battlefields in the U.S. The battlefield at Pea Ridge is now Pea Ridge National Military Park founded in 1956, one of the best-preserved civil war battlefields. **
