Description
A one of a kind and very rare original CDV (Carte de visite) engraving steel printing plate of Colonel (James R.) Garfield. Plate was made and used by Civil War photographer Elias Dexter, 564 Broadway New York, Ca 1861 to make CDVs engravings of Garfield (at this time, circa 1861, Colonel) during the Civil War. Caption on the engraving reads "Col Garfield" , below that it reads: "Elias Dexter 564 Broadway".
It shows (James R.) Garfield, later President of the United States, then in command of the 42nd Ohio Infantry Regiment, in his Union Army Colonel's uniform, circa 1861. He was named a Brigadier General in 1862. Elected President of the United States in 1880, he as assassinated in 1881.
Plate measures 6"x9" overall with the cdv image measuring 2-1/2"x4" . Plate has some dark stains here and there but mostly clear on the image of Garfield himself.
