    Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was a teacher in Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, when commissioned as Major, in the 17th Infantry, Massachusetts on August 1, 1861, at age 32. On May 13, 1863, he was promoted to Colonel in command of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery. He was at this time put Military Governor of the Department of the Albemarle, with headquarters at Plymouth, North Carolina. For his actions in defense of this position against the Confederates from December 9-21, 1864, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on September 3, 1865. After the war he resumed his teaching career and was a member of the Major Howe Veteran’s Post # 47, GAR, in Haverhill, Massachusetts until his death."
