CDV,  Colonel William A. Jackson, 18th New York Infantry
Jackson enlisted May 14th, 1861 at Albany in the 18th New York Infantry. He died of disease in Washington in November of that year. Prior to taking command of his regiment, he had been the states Inspector General.  During the battle of Bull Run, the 18th was held in reserve, and later in the battle when things became confused, an unauthorized officer called for a retreat, but Col. Jackson made his regiment stand fast. This unauthorized officer called again for an immediate retreat, just as Confederate cavalry broke out from the woods.  Eventually, the regiment fell back towards Alexandria in good military order. Jackson had remained in his saddle for over 24 hours while the engagement took place.  He died not long after from what is being called "a bilious remittent fever."
    A very scarce image.
Condition is fine+. The reddish tone of the images I provided are due to the light I shot them in, "in the real" they are of a dark, sharp albumen finish.
    From the Michael McAfee Collection.
